(1) What are the main features of the mechanical teachers and the schoolroom that Margie and Tommy have in the story?

Ans. Mechanical Teachers: These are the special TV screens where all the sectors of different subjects are adjusted to a particular level of each child.

The mechanical teachers would be on at a particular time. It would start the lesson mechanically and give tests. Then it would ask the children to insert the previous days homework in the proper slot.

Schoolroom: Schoolrooms were the rooms next to the bedroom with the Mechanical teacher on and waiting for the child. It was always on at the same time daily except Saturday and Sunday.

(2) Why did Margie hate school ? Why did she think the old kind of school must have been fun ?

Ans. Margie always hated school but she started hating it more after one incident. The mechanical teacher had been giving her Geography test after test above her level and she had been doing very badly. She was even sent for the County Inspector. She wanted her teacher to go away altogether.

She thought the old kind of school must have been fun as all the children from neighbourhood would go to school together. They would laugh, play, shout and learn together in school and at the end of the day, all the children would go home. They would talk and help one another with the homework.

(3) Do you agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story? Give reasons for your answer.

The school in the story has a TV screen as a teacher, next to the bedroom of the house. It gets on at a particular time everyday. It gives routine work, teach the lesson and gives homework. There is a dull atmosphere, child is all alone. There is no exchange of words. Nobody is there to interact.

Whereas in schools today, children come to school together. They learn, talk and play together. They have different periods of different subjects. Teachers also tell the stories to children. If child has any problem, he discusses with his teacher and friends. They learn to adjust with others. Children play many outdoor games in school and in happy mood they go back home.

Thinking about the Poem

I. (1) Where does the traveller find himself ? What problem does he face?

Ans. The traveller finds himself standing on a fork in the path. He is in a problem as he must choose one path and he is unable to decide which one to choose.

Ans. It refers to forest which has withering leaves as in the season of autumn.

Ans. It means that the path had a lot of grass on it. This means that it had not been walked over by many people.

Ans. (i) The two paths were similar. In the beginning, the poet felt that one of them was grassy and had not been walked over by many people, but when he walked on it for some distance, he realized that it was like the other road.
